Aslı Erdoğan (* 1967) is a Turkish writer and columnist, human rights defender, former political prisoner, and particle physicist. She lives in Germany. She has written eight books, novels, short stories, and collections of poetic prose and essays, which have been translated into more than twenty languages. In 2016, she was arrested for collaborating with the pro-Kurdish newspaper Özgür Gündem and spent almost five months in prison as a political prisoner. After her confiscated passport was returned, she was invited to a four-day trip to a literary event in Berlin. She was not allowed to return.

She has won numerous literary and human rights awards, including the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize and the Václav Havel Library Foundation Prize. Her work has been adapted for theatre, classical ballet, radio, short film, and opera. Her most awarded books include the short story collection The Stone Building and Other Places (2010) and the novel Kırmızı Pelerinli Kent (The City in Crimson Cloak, 1998).
