Lokman Tsui is a writer, recovering academic, and amateur activist. Born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, he received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, and after graduation moved to Hong Kong, his parents’ homeland, to become a university lecturer.
He participated in the Umbrella Movement in 2014, the Anti-Extradition Bill Movement in 2019, and left Hong Kong in 2021. He is currently a research fellow at the University of Toronto, where he studies digital authoritarianism and transnational repression. He lives in Amsterdam and is writing a book – a personal history of home, trauma, and totalitarianism.
